Excerpt from chap. I of the trans. of Achever Clausewitz, forthcoming this Fall in translation as Battling to the End: Politics, War, and Apocalypse (Michigan State University Press, 2009).
These pages spell out the mimetic character of Clausewitz’s sure intuition of the “trend to extremes” as a result of violent reciprocity that he observed in his experience of the Napoleonic wars. The apocalyptic dimension of modern warfare is discussed as it concerns present conflicts in the world.

From a talk given in Sarajevo, October,2008. By using Elias Canetti's concept of the "religions of lament" this article discusses the temptation of the Antichrist - scapegoating the scapegoaters - easily following Abrahamic monotheism (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) and its exposure of the violent sacred typical of all archaic religions. It emphasizes therefore the importance of forgiveness to overcome this threat that challenges our modern world.
